Specifications
Cr12 steel is a widely used high carbon and high chromium cold work die steel with high strength, good hardenability and good wear resistance, but poor impact toughness.
A high carbon high chromium steel noted for its resistance to abrasion, it offers excellent dimensional stability in hardening.
After heat treatment D3 is hard, durable and dense, and is immune from sinking in use. It offers a measure of corrosion resistance when polished.
In general, the applications of D3 tool steel resemble those of D2 but it should be remembered that D3 has better wear resistance of the two steels
and is preferred for such items as shear blades. Owing to its higher wear resistance, D3 tool steel is slightly more difficult to grind than D2.
Applications:
Forming rolls, drawing dies, forming, powder compaction tooling, and lamination dies.

ANNEALING
Annealing must be performed after hot working and before re-hardening.
Heat at a rate not exceeding 400°F per hour (222°C per hour) to 1600-1650°F (871-899°C), and hold at temperature for 1 hour per inch (25.4mm) of maximum thickness; 2 hours minimum. Then cool slowly with the furnace at a rate not exceeding 50°F per hour (28°C per hour) to 1000°F (538°C). Continue cooling to ambient temperature in the furnace or in air. The resultant hardness should be a maximum of 255 HBW.
Cryogenic Treatment: Refrigeration treatments should typically be performed after the first temper, and must be followed by a second temper.
D3 Steel Round Bar: diameter 5mm – 400mm
Advantage:
1. For the production of cold dies and punches that are subject to low impact loads, small to medium production volumes, and require high wear resistance.
2. Cold cutting blade for cutting hard and thin metal
3. For drill sleeves, gauges, wire drawing dies, embossing dies, crepe plates, drawing dies, cold extrusion dies and screw roller dies
